Castle and chateau Bečov

An unforgettable dominant in the valley of the Teplé River is the late Gothic castle and the Baroque chateau in Bečov nad Teplou. In the interior of the castle is worth seeing especially the library and chateau chapel. The Romanesque reliquary of St. Maura, which is the second most valuable goldsmith monument in the Czech Republic after the crown jewels.

The reliquary of St. Maura

There is one of the most precious treasures in our territory – St. Maur’s reliquary – in the vault room of the chateau. It was made during the first third of the 13th century for the Benedictine monastery in Florennes in today’s Belgium and designed to store the remains of Saint Maurus, Timothy, Vol. John the Baptist and the Holy Apolináře. After the abolition of the monastery during the French Revolution, the reliquary Alfred de Beaufort – Spontin was recruited and, after repair, he was transferred to his seat in Becov. After the II. World War II, when Beaufort-Spontini Bečov left, buried the reliquary secretly under the floor of the castle chapel, where he lay for forty years. In 1985, the reliquary was finally found, but in a very poor condition. The demanding restoration of this rare and unique monument of European significance lasted for eleven years.

From the outside, the reliquary is decorated with twelve reliefs, fourteen gold-plated silver statues, precious stones, semi-precious stones, antique gems, filigree and enamels.

Premonstratensian monastery Teplá

The area of the monastery, which founded the Blessed Hroznata in 1193, is one of the most important in the Czech Republic. The monastery served premonstrates for centuries until the end of II. world war. In 1950, like other monasteries in Czechoslovakia, it was closed and served as a barracks of the Czechoslovak People’s Army for 28 years. Since 1958 only the church and library have been made accessible for tours. Upon leaving the army, the building continued to ruin. It was only in 1990 that the monastery, heavily damaged by many years of neglect, was returned to the Premonstratensian order. Since then a gradual reconstruction of the whole area has taken place. In the monastery, in addition to regular worship, concerts and exhibitions are held.

The monastery complex includes the Baroque convent, the Gothic presbytery of the monastery church with the Romanesque chapel, the unique monastery library, which is the second largest historical library in Bohemia with its 100,000 volumes, a park, a cemetery and a museum. The most important building is the Church of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary built between 1193 and 1232. The monastery also houses the farm buildings of the brewery, the haystack and the granaries.

You can visit the monastery almost all year round.

Loket castle

Loket Castle is located on the banks of the Ohře River near Karlovy Vary since the beginning of the 13th century. Gothic Loket Castle has been an important strategic location for centuries. Today it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Karlovy Vary Region.

History of Loket Castle
The original Romanesque buildings have preserved particularly valuable rotunda, the foundations of the castle tower and the foundations of the northern palace. The present form of the castle was given by the extensive reconstruction during the reign of Václav IV., From which comes, for example, the so-called Markrabský dům. Further reconstructions took place in the second half of the 15th century and touched mainly the southern palace where the Šlikov refectory hall and the so-called Šlikov archive, which was built in the eastern palace, arose during the Šlikov rule. The reconstruction of the castle for the purpose of the prison was unfavorable in the early 19th century – most of the buildings were reduced by one floor and one of the oldest parts – the so-called rock room – was demolished.

Tour of Loket Castle
Castle Loket offers many interesting. Among the most popular parts of the exhibition are the castle prison with an authentic exhibition of torturous law, a museum of weapons and a porcelain exhibition. The castle is also surrounded by several legends, such as the rulers of the Loket Rocks, stones and the underworld of Gottstain, enchanted by the burgrave or the dragon in the castle tower.

Lookout tower Háj u Aše

The observation tower in Háje u Aše is the most western-oriented observation tower in the Czech Republic. You will find it on the hill of Háj – the highest peak of the Czech part of the Smrčiny mountain range at an altitude of 758 m. Along with the lookout tower at the beginning of the 20th century a recreational park zone was created.

This massive, 34-meter-high granite block tower was similarly to the lookout tower on the Green Mountain named after German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. In 1913, Bismarck’s bronze relief, which remained here until the end of the Second World War, was attached to the lookout tower. Together with the nearby tourist cottage (where it is possible to lend the key to the lookout tower), Háj is now a pleasant place for hiking trips. The view from the lookout tower can be enjoyed after overcoming 122 steps from the observation tower at 25 meters.

Lookout tower Cibulka

The observation tower is situated on Šibeniční vrch near the village of Olovi, approximately half a distance between the villages Oloví and Krajková. The top is forested, the altitude is about 655 m. Its total height is 29.3 meters.

Originally, the lookout tower on the Bouc peak was about 1.5 km east of today’s building. It was built by the owner of the Svatavy’s assigned Josef Schmieger. This was not the opening ceremony in 1896 and the lookout tower was dilapidated until the dilapidated lookout tower in 1913 was bought by the Oloví Wreath Association. The observation tower was dismantled and moved to Šibeniční vrch. The tower was completely destroyed during the Second World War. In 2011, a project to restore the look-out tower was launched. The opening ceremony of the new observation tower was held on August 31, 2014.

From the lookout tower there is a view in all directions. In the north, you can see the town of Oloví and the ridges of the Ore Mountains, the eastern direction of Boucsky vrch (667 m above sea level) which is about 1.5 km from the lookout tower and where the original lookout tower stood. Southeast to the south is the Sokolov Basin and the town of Sokolov, in the background of the Slavkov Forest, the westernmost part of the Ore Mountains and Smrčina with the Green Mountain.

The tower is open all year round.
